Surroundings

Around our guest house, the garden, river, animals and all the surrounding nature.

When you arrive at Uxondoa, you'll follow a 800m little road bordered by willow trees, the luxurious vegetation and the peace will give you the feeling of being away from everything. Uxondoa is one of the rare houses to be so close to the Nivelle. This closeness to the water makes it a unique place nearby Saint Jean de Luz. At your arrival you'll be delighted by the sound of the waterfall (inaudible from the house).

Don't expect a "jardin à la française" with all flower-beds and bushes aligned and sharply cut. Having a landscape degree, I tried to integrate the garden into the surrounding nature. Around the house the plantations are more gardenlike, the farther away you get, the more wild nature takes over. The garden is a place we enjoy in the spring and the summer, so it's at that time that I pay the most attention to it.

More water: That's why the Basque country is so green! But the moderate temperatures and this water allow us to grow an incredible choice of plants. You will find at Uxondoa oceanic climate plants like Camelias, Azaleas, Hydrangeas, but also, mediterraneans plants such as Sage, Dimorphotecas, Lantanas etc...It's a gardener's paradise.

The river Nivelle flows right in front of Uxondoa, it's a small inshore coastal river where you can fish, go canoeing, or just have a swim. Have a look at all the activities you can do on our page 'more information' On site, you'll be able to meet our Pottoks, which are basque ponies and if you're lucky other 'neighbors' who are very shy ( deers, genets, herons...) In fact, Uxondoa is situated in zone natura 2000. Natura 2000 is an ecological network of protected areas in the European Union.
